چکیده

Recently, lateral resolution of photoemission spectroscopy has been rapidly improving by several types of energy-filtered electron emission microscopes (PEEM) or by focused light sources.1–6) On the other hand, laser-based photoemission spectroscopy facilitates femtosecond time-resolution, revealing the dynamics of electrons and atoms on surfaces.7–11) The combination of lateral and temporal resolutions is the next step to be realized. Here, we present our plan to develop a time-resolved photoemission microspectrometer based on fs VUV laser radiation. In our plan, VUV light generated as the sixth harmonic of a titanium sapphire (Ti:Sa) laser of 100 fs pulse duration is focused on a sample surface, and photoelectrons are detected with a high-energy resolution time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer. Our aim is to achieve a photoelectron energy resolution as high as 30meV. The high-energy resolution is crucial in photoemission spectroscopy of the valence band, because the photoemission features from surface states or adsorption-induced states frequently appear as sharp peaks whose widths are less than 100meV. This energy resolution is extremely difficult to achieve in a magnification electron lens system of PEEM.

Femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with a vacuum-ultraviolet photon source based on laser high-order harmonic generation.

A laser-based tabletop approach to femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with photons in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) energy range is described. The femtosecond VUV pulses are produced by high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of an amplified femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser system. Two generations of the same setup and results from photoelectron spectroscopy in the gas phase are disc...

Valence transition of YbInCu4 observed in hard X-ray photoemission spectra.

Yb 3d and valence-band photoemission spectra of the first-order valence-transition compound YbInCu4 have been measured with hard x ray at an excitation energy of 5.95 keV. Abrupt changes are clearly observed in both spectra around the transition temperature T(V)=42 K, in comparison with ultraviolet and soft x-ray photoemission (VUV-PES and SX-PES) spectra. From the Yb 3d spectra, the Yb valence...

Statistical properties of the radiation from VUV FEL at DESY operating at 30 nm wavelength in the femtosecond regime

Since spring, 2005 vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV FEL) at DESY operates as user facility in the wavelength range around 30 nm. Electron beam formation system at the VUV FEL is essentially nonlinear and naturally results in a formation of a short high-current leading peak in the density distribution that produces FEL radiation. The main feature of the femtosecond mode of operation o...
